The Official 12-Card and 13-Card Deal Mechanics
Tongits is played using a single standard 52-card deck without jokers between exactly three players. The designated dealer receives 13 cards, while the two non-dealing competitors each receive 12 cards. The dealer initiates the game by evaluating their hand and discarding one card to the center pile, after which play proceeds strictly clockwise.
Valid Meld Formations: Bahay Sets and Sequences
A valid combination, or 'Bahay', consists of either a Three-of-a-Kind / Four-of-a-Kind (cards of identical rank across different suits) or a Straight Flush sequence (three or more consecutive cards in the identical suit, such as 7-8-9 of Spades). In Tongits, the Ace can only serve as the lowest card in an A-2-3 sequence; wrap-around straights such as K-A-2 are strictly invalid.
Drawing from the Deck vs. Picking Up the Opponent's Discard
On each turn, a player may either draw an unseen card from the center stock pile or pick up the card just discarded by the player immediately to their right. Crucially, a player may only claim the discard pile if that card immediately completes a new, open meld that is laid down on the table during that exact turn.
